[1]Charles Booker
This is serious.
Late last night, news broke from a leaked Supreme Court opinion that Roe
v. Wade will be overturned as early as this month.
This draft opinion confirms our worst fears. In a radical act of
government overreach, the conservative majority of the United States
Supreme Court has all but confirmed that it intends to overturn decades of
settled legal precedent, which would deny millions of Americans their
agency, humanity, life-saving healthcare, and reproductive freedom.
I want to make my stance clear: Everyone deserves access to quality
healthcare and privacy to make deeply personal healthcare decisions with
their doctors. That includes medically necessary and often life-saving
procedures like abortion.
We can’t underestimate the urgency of this moment. If action isn’t taken
soon, abortion access will disappear all across the country — including in
Kentucky, where we are already fighting a law that would effectively ban
abortions in our Commonwealth.
The United States Supreme Court has tacitly agreed that the death of
millions of women — our daughters, our mothers, our loved ones — is not
too high a cost to pay to advance their radical, dangerous, and shameful
political agenda. It is absolutely critical that the Senate Majority show
the leadership to abolish the filibuster now, and codify the protections
of Roe v. Wade into law.
But here’s the thing. The reality is that because
of senators like Rand Paul, it’s unlikely we’ll get the votes to take
action.
This is why we’re running against Rand Paul who has consistently upheld an
anti-woman, anti-family agenda and voted against the protections we need
to defend reproductive rights. This is why it’s so critical we expand our
Senate majority and end the destructive filibuster that has blocked so
many opportunities to protect abortion access in our country. And this is
why I’m reaching out to you, to ask for your support.
I won’t stop fighting until Roe v. Wade is codified into law. But we must
expand the Senate majority to ensure that happens. The only way we’re
going to defeat Rand Paul, expand the Senate, and codify Roe v. Wade is if
we work together for the next 188 days up until Election Day.
No matter what, we won’t back down. Together, we will fight to make sure
everyone has the freedom to make deeply personal choices about their
healthcare and their lives.
In solidarity,
Charles
