Late last night, Politico published a leaked draft opinion from the majority that the Supreme Court has the votes to strike down Roe v. Wade.

In the leaked draft of the majority’s opinion, Justice Alito writes “We hold that Roe…must be overruled.” If this is in fact the majority’s opinion, the Court’s ruling would create a reproductive freedom crisis this country has not experienced in 50 years.

Overturning Roe would undo decades of progress, and endanger the health, freedom, and bodily autonomy of millions of Americans.

Thanks to the work of Governor Jared Polis and our state legislature, Colorado will remain a safe refuge where individual rights are respected. They recently passed the Reproductive Health Equity Act which enshrines the right to an abortion and contraception into state law.

But that is not the case everywhere, and we can’t sit back while abortion rights are under attack.

We’re watching a coordinated assault on reproductive rights happen in real-time. Republican-controlled state legislatures have passed restrictive legislation on reproductive rights. Now, the Supreme Court is preparing to wade in, too.

If this decision stands, this would open the floodgates for states across this country to ban abortion. At least 26 states would be poised to move quickly and ban abortion — leaving more than 36 million women without abortion access.
