Last night, news emerged that the Supreme Court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade,
ending the constitutional right to abortion in the United States and creating a clear path for anti-abortion state lawmakers to restrict, criminalize, and ban abortion altogether.
Just weeks ago, Florida Governor DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban into law, and without protection from Roe, it will take effect in July. This ban is not only cruel and immoral, it’s completely counter to what the majority of Floridians want – the freedom to make our own medical decisions. And we know Republicans will now be emboldened to push for earlier bans until abortion is completely banned in our state.
Across the country, Republican-led state legislatures have been waiting for this very moment to strip us of our rights and take our choices away from us. We've known this day would come, but it’s still devastating.
The future of reproductive rights in Florida now lies firmly in the hands of state and local officials.
We can no longer rely on the courts to protect our rights, so it’s up to us to elect leaders who will. This fight must be taken to the ballot box. We need Democratic pro-choice voices in positions of power at all levels of state and local government, and Ruth’s List is committed to making that happen.
The fight for reproductive rights is far from over.
