John,
Last night, a leaked draft opinion of the Supreme Court showed there may be five votes to overturn Roe v. Wade and dismantle the right to choose in America. While it is not yet law and Roe still stands, the draft opinion is frightening, as it will harm so many and will certainly cost lives.
As I read it, I was furious. It would send us back to a time I can remember - when we lived in shadows and silence. People around the country - including in my home state of Texas - would once again wake up without access to abortion. As we have seen before, ending access to legal abortion does not elimate the need. It just increases the risk.
While it is a dark moment, I find some solace in looking at our LGBTQ candidates - more than 270 leaders running across the country, including in states that have laws on the books that will strip away a person’s right to choose. Each of these candidates will fight for abortion rights and the right to privacy. It has been a core component of our endorsement criteria since the beginning, more than 30 years ago. We need them in office desperately and urgently.
Electing people to codify abortion rights into law will not fully undo the damage of the Supreme Court ruling we fear. But it is how we fight back. We will not be intimidated into silence again.
Yours in the movement,
Mayor Annise Parker
