Politico Reports on Draft Opinion from Alito: “Roe and Casey Must be Overruled"
Protesters clashed outside the Supreme Court after leaked draft strikes down Roe v. Wade. Politico: The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes ( Politico). The leak itself is unprecedented. Kathryn Jean Lopez: It’s shocking. Not that the Supreme Court would overturn Roe, but that someone would presumably leak a draft opinion (we don’t know if it is the current one) to change the ruling ( National Review). Andy McCarthy: If this story is true, the Court should issue its opinion right away. Otherwise the disgraceful leak wins. I would say that if my side lost. If we lose the integrity of the Court’s process, we lose the Court. That should be intolerable to all of us who love the country ( Twitter).

Supreme Court Issues Unanimous Opinion in First Amendment Victory
A 9-0 decision with three concurring opinions from the conservative justices. From the story: The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the city of Boston violated the First Amendment by refusing to fly a local organization’s Christian flag in front of city hall, though it had flown other groups’ flags. The decision in Shurtleff v. the City of Boston was unanimous, with the Court ruling that Boston should have allowed the Christian group’s flag because the flags did not represent government speech ( National Review). ADF’s Senior Counsel John Bursch: “This case is about much more than displaying a Christian flag at City Hall; this is about the protection of our First Amendment rights, which extend equally to all Americans, without government punishment. We are pleased the Supreme Court has upheld the right of religious citizens to participate in the public square” ( Alliance Defending Freedom). Justice Kavanaugh: Under the Constitution, a government may not treat religious persons, religious organizations, or religious speech as second-class ( Supreme Court).

Putin to Receive Surgery for Cancer, Will Temporarily Transfer Power to Former Security Agency Chief
Financial Times: Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to undergo cancer surgery and temporarily hand over power to a hardline former federal police chief, according to a new report. Putin will transfer control of Russia’s government to Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Russian federal police’s Security Council, while he is incapacitated during and after the procedure ( New York Post). HotAir: Before anyone gets their hopes up in terms of regime change, the surgery is being described as relatively “minor” and Putin is only expected to be out of power for a few days. If that’s the case, this may not wind up changing anything in terms of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. But even if Putin were to be taken out for a significant amount of time (or permanently), his replacement might arguably be worse. Nikolai Patrushev is widely considered to be an even more brutal, sadistic actor than Putin himself, so a more reasonable negotiating partner for Ukraine wouldn’t be likely to emerge ( HotAir).

New York Times Silent on Biden’s New Disinformation Board
From the story: The Times still hasn’t even acknowledged the formation of the DHS’s new Ministry of Truth. If you still regard mainstream journalism as an earnest, if left-leaning, profession that seeks to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable “without fear or favor, regardless of party, sect, or interests involved,” that discrepancy might be confusing. But it makes sense if you realize that today, America’s elite legacy media essentially function as an activist extension of institutional progressivism. Its job is not to hold the powerful accountable, but to serve as the attack dogs of the most powerful players in American life. It is an enforcement arm of the socio-political hegemony of the elite Left — the Public Relations team for the alliance of academia, Big Tech, the corporate HR bureaucracy, the culture industry, and the Democratic Party ( National Review). Joe Gabriel Simonson: The New York times, which printed probably 10 thousand words on Tucker Carlson this weekend, has not run anything on the DHS disinformation governance board ( Twitter).

Ukraine Drone Strikes Sink Two Russian Naval Vessels
From the story: Ukraine on Monday said it sank two Russian naval vessels in the Black Sea with drone strikes, as a Russian missile attack killed civilians in Odessa and heavy fighting continued in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine’s military said in recent days that it carried out several airstrikes on the strategic island, located 22 miles off the Ukrainian coast southwest of Odessa, destroying the air-defense system and other heavy weapons of the Russian military unit that occupies it. The two boats in the area, each capable of carrying 20 Marines in addition to three crew members, were likely to be carrying reinforcements and resupplies ( Wall Street Journal). Fox News: More than a quarter of troops that Russia sent to fight in Ukraine are now believed to be “combat ineffective,” the United Kingdom announced Monday. Combat ineffectiveness is the ability for a military unit to carry out its assigned duties, and is impacted by troop and equipment losses ( Fox News).

Russian Minister Lavrov Claims Hitler Had Jewish Roots
The latest, twisted episode in Russia’s de-Nazify myth. From the story: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the startling suggestion that Nazi Germany leader Adolf Hitler had Jewish roots — prompting Israel’s prime minister to issue a rebuke accusing the official of using the Holocaust as a “battering ram.” Lavrov made the comments Sunday when he was questioned by Italian media about how Russia could claim it intended to “denazify” Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelensky is Jewish. “When they say, ‘What sort of nazification is this if we are Jews,’ well, I think that Hitler also had Jewish origins, so it means nothing,” Lavrov said. “For a long time now, we’ve been hearing the wise Jewish people say that the biggest anti-Semites are the Jews themselves,” the Russian foreign minister said ( New York Post). Times of Israel: “The aim of such lies is to blame the Jews themselves for the most terrible crimes in history that were committed against them, thus freeing from responsibility the oppressors of Israel,” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a statement from his office. Bennett’s denunciation followed stronger condemnation from Lapid and other Israeli ministers. “This is an unforgivable and scandalous comment, a terrible historical error and we expect an apology,” Lapid said. “Hitler was not of Jewish origin and the Jews did not murder themselves in the Holocaust. The lowest form of racism against Jews is blaming the Jews themselves for antisemitism” ( Times of Israel).

Los Angeles Homeless Crisis Continues With Law Enforcement’s Hands Tied
From the story: Nine months after the City Council adopted the new law allowing council members to designate areas as off-limits to homeless camps, permanent metal signs setting deadlines for all homeless people to leave have been posted at more than 100 locations. But tents and makeshift shelters remain at many of the sites even weeks or months past the deadlines as outreach workers struggle to persuade people to move voluntarily and the Los Angeles Police Department has issued tickets sparingly. Simply put, there are not enough shelters, tiny homes or hotel rooms for people on the streets to go to and not enough people to help coordinate getting them there ( Los Angeles Times).

California Population Sees Another Dip
Daily Wire: The California Department of Finance said in a report Monday that the state’s population declined by 117,552 residents in the year 2021, bringing the state’s total population to 39,185,605 people as of January 1, 2022. But that population decline of about 0.3% was also a significant slowdown from 2020, when the state population declined by about 0.59% between the April 2020 Census date and the end of the year, the Department of Finance said ( Daily Wire).

Man Behind Musk’s Viral Cartoon Speaks
Wall Street Journal: I hope many on the left will resist the urge to debunk or dismiss my cartoon and instead use it as an opportunity to understand why so many people feel it describes their experience. Something has happened over the past decade to make many liberals feel politically homeless, and a lack of curiosity about why is a recipe for not only political failure but social strife. It contributes to our increasing inability to have reasonable, compassionate discussions on issues of great importance ( Wall Street Journal).
