Congratulations to Diane for correctly identifying the Common Baskettail dragonfly (Epitheca cynosura). According to Dragonflies of Northern Virginia, this species can be found in the Spring near sunny streams or high above clearings. This is a small dragonfly, about 1.6” or 38-43mm. Both male and female have the tan markings on their thorax and abdomen.
