96 homes were proposed in Burbank, CA, using a gamechanging YIMBY law, SB 35, that allows speedier approvals for the most urgently needed housing. Planning staff were insistent that the project met all SB 35 requirements and should be approved immediately.
But the city council ignored their own staff, claiming the law didn’t apply to Burbank. These are “equestrian priority streets,” one councilwoman argued. The city chose horses over people.
They even scoffed at the notion that YIMBYs would sue. “You’d be hard-pressed to find any organization that’s going to sue us,” said a councilman. Clearly they don’t know us very well.
We responded that we might sue, and that’s when the threatening hate mail started.
