Your weekly Indivisible Newsletter Indivisibles,
In just a few weeks, President Biden could make a decision that would help 45 million people and pour billions of dollars into the economy.
Last Monday, at a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, President Biden confirmed that he was looking at options to cancel some amount of student loan debt. On Thursday, Biden said that a final decision will be made in the coming weeks.
This is a big moment. If we can support President Biden, and push him to go even further, we could fundamentally change the reality of overwhelming debt in this country for 45 million borrowers. There’s been a lot of research on loan cancellation, and the studies are clear: Universal student debt cancellation helps address systemic inequality, builds the middle class (particularly the Black middle class), creates jobs, increases home-buying rates, and does so much more.
We have a small window of opportunity to uplift Biden for following through on a major campaign promise. It’s time for us to encourage him to take bold action at a time when it is sorely needed.
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
Your 3 weekly to-dos
- If your representative is a Democrat, click here to call and urge them to tell Biden to cancel at least $50,000 in federal student loan debt. 25% of borrowers who had student debt in 2009 owe more today than they did 10 years ago. We need to pressure our representatives to remind Biden that the time is now for bold action.
- If you have a Democratic senator, click here to call now and urge them to tell Biden to cancel at least $50,000 in federal student loan debt. Our senators need to speak up for the roughly 80% of borrowers who would become debt-free from a $50,000 relief target.
- If you live in a red state or do not have congressional representation, click here to call the White House comment line to urge President Biden to go big and cancel at least $50,000 in federal student loan debt. Let’s make sure the White House hears directly from the people that $50,000 of relief is what we need.
P.S. We rely on your support to keep action pages up and running, fund ads to get the word out, and continue all the work we’re doing this year. If you’re able, click here to donate to help fund our work.

Register here for Movement Briefing: January 6 Select Committee Hearings. Trump and extremist factions engaged in a criminal conspiracy that incited the violent attack on our country on January 6. Here’s the good news: The House committee charged with investigating the January 6 attack is preparing for public hearings to expose the full scope anti-democratic forces in this country. Join our movement partners in a briefing to help us make sure these hearings break through the busy news cycle and reach the general public.
