John,
Today, I want to tell you about the LoveLife Foundation — an Oakland-based organization committed to providing a supportive and empowering environment for at-risk youth and mobilizing community support to change the economic and social conditions that lead to violence.
The LoveLife Foundation was founded in November of 1997 by my dear friend, Donald Lacy, in memory of his daughter, LoEshe Adanma Lacy — who was an innocent bystander when she was senselessly murdered at the age of 16.
In the 25 years since, the organization has reached tens of thousands of youth and their families, working with at-risk Black youth at or below the poverty line in Oakland — who for the most part have been ignored and unvalued by our society.
The LoveLife Foundation aims to help youth discover positive and life-affirming alternatives to the destructive influences of drugs, gangs, and the dangers of life on the streets. They are promoting life and saving lives through community revitalization, leadership, and development.
And they do all of this on a micro budget, with no full-time paid staff and some volunteers. The money they raise from charitable contributions goes directly to servicing young people and their families.
I was proud to observe the third anniversary of LoEshe’s death and proclaim the work of the LoveLife Foundation from the floor of Congress back in 2000. And as the foundation approaches its 25th anniversary, I’m calling on you to join me in support of their lifesaving work rooted in anti-violence and youth advocacy.
The LoveLife Foundation has set a $150,000 goal to commemorate their 25th anniversary and keep up their critical work to promote life and invest in Black lives. Will you make a charitable donation today to support their efforts?

“LoveLife” is the official motto of Oakland, and next time you see “LoveLife” printed on an Entering Oakland sign, I hope you are reminded of the critical work people like Donald Lacy are undertaking to uplift at-risk youth and address the root causes of violence in our communities.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
