What was on the menu in Venice last night? |
Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy returned last night, following Stanley Tucci on his quest to explore every region in Italy. In yesterday's episode, Tucci traveled to the Veneto region, the center of Italy's former trade empire and the home of Venice. You can watch it right now on CNNgo.
The region's unique history and proximity to water created a one-of-a-kind culinary experience for Tucci, and he loved every minute of it.
Take a look at some of the things he sampled:
Cicchetti - Tucci started his trip to Venice trip with cicchetti — a small bite-size snack. Cicchetti can include everything from squiggly sea creatures and fried meatballs called polpette, to colorful toppings spread on slices of baguette called crostini.
Traditionally, you eat them standing at a bar, or just outside the door. The ritual of having a drink and a snack in a welcoming setting is what's key. Tucci enjoyed his cicchetti for breakfast with a glass of white wine.

Baccala Mantecato - Next up is Osteria Ai 4 Feri Stori, a popular gondolier hang-out known for its modern take on cicchetti. A local gondola driver told Tucci the restaurant is cicchetti heaven, so Tucci tried an assortment including baccalà mantecato, or whipped cod.
Baccalà mantecato is "a snack that is to Venice as pizza is to Naples" and "it's available everywhere in the city," Tucci said.
Risotto Nero Di Seppia - Tucci's friend Chef Gianni Scappin showed Tucci how to make a Venetian classic: risotto nero di seppia (black squid ink risotto).
"Perfect!" Tucci said after his first bite. "Not chewy, not mushy. |
Golden Spaghetti - Michelin-starred chef Chiara Pavan taught Tucci how to make golden spaghetti. It's topped with an actual gold leaf.
"Balancing them with sweet and sour tastes, Chiara transforms salty ingredients into gold," Tucci said. "It's culinary alchemy."
