Hi John, 1 in 6 children worldwide struggles with a mental health disorder. That’s a shocking fact – and I hope it grabbed your attention. But stories help us truly understand the suffering behind statistics. I’d like to share one with you today: August 4th, 2020, was an unremarkable day in Beirut before 11-year-old Mariam* noticed smoke rising in the distance. Curious, her family went outside to get a better view – everyone but Mariam’s sister, Cidra. Moments later, a massive explosion tore through the nearby seaport, inflicting injuries, destroying their home and killing 15-year-old Cidra. John, Mariam and her brothers are struggling with grief over losing their big sister. We can’t expect kids like them to cope with loss and trauma on their own. Tell Congress: we must pass the MINDS Act to help millions of children around the world heal and grow. The Mental Health in International Development and Humanitarian Settings (MINDS) Act would prioritize mental health support in U.S. foreign aid for the first time ever. 75% of people with mental health conditions in low- and middle-income countries receive no treatment. This legislation could change their lives. Save the Children Action Network will continue to advocate for kids throughout Mental Health Awareness Month, but we rely on your voice to help us reach lawmakers. Urge Congress to pass the MINDS Act – because struggling children can’t wait any longer for emotional support. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
