Dear John,
It’s rare I get to write with a happy update on the anti-abortion fake clinics front, so please join me in a round of celebration!
Help us beat back against anti-abortion fake clinics with a donation.
Obria Group, the anti-abortion fake clinic chain that received Title X family planning dollars under the Trump administration, is no longer a grant awardee through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as of last month.
This is welcome news but not entirely a surprise, as HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra is no stranger to fighting anti-abortion fake clinics: as a state attorney general, he defended California’s comprehensive, common-sense Reproductive FACT Act, designed to regulate the deception and stigma pushed by fake clinics.
The Supreme Court unfortunately sided with anti-fake clinics in that case, NIFLA v. Becerra, allowing anti-abortion fake clinics to keep spreading lies and shaming abortion-seekers, unchecked. But Secretary Becerra is now using his powers as a Biden cabinet member to keep at least one insidious anti-abortion fake clinic chain at bay, and we’re grateful!
Your support over our many years of leadership to hold anti-abortion fake clinics accountable has meant everything. Please keep it up so we can keep exposing #BadFaithMedicine.
Cordially,
Shireen Shakouri
Deputy Director, Reproaction
P.S. You can read more about this and other ways fake clinics suck up public funds in my recent blog post, “Anti-Abortion Fake Clinics and Your Tax Dollars.” In the meantime, we’d love if you supported our work.
