From Juneau to You! Dear Friends, With just over two weeks left in this session, the pressure to finish business is at full speed. In the House, members are working on addressing the Capital Budget and members of the Senate are seeking to address the operating budget. In addition to handling our priorities, some of my bills are also moving forward and are close to becoming law. Stay tuned to hear the outcome of our efforts. Legislative Bill Updates Three of my bills are continuing to gain momentum and are close to final passage. Senate Bill 7 (SB7) “An Act requiring the Department of Public Safety to publish certain policies and procedures on the department’s Internet website,” awaits a House floor vote. After the bill passes in the House, it'll go to the Governor's desk to sign into law. Senate Bill 80 (SB80) is also in the House Rules committee and awaits a vote on the House floor. SB 80 encourages local school districts to offer mental health education to students. Senate Bill 222 (SB222) which extends the Board of Occupational and Physical Therapy until 2030, also heads to the House floor for a vote in the near future. Legislative Budget Updates On April 21st, the Senate Finance Committee passed legislation to change the PFD formula. Senate Bill 199 would change the PFD formula to align with a 50/50 split of the annual POMV draw. · If the bill is passed, the 2022 PFD would be $2,600 per person. · In 2023, the PFD formula would change to align with a 75-25 split of the POMV. · If the bill is passed, the 2023 PFD would be $1,300 per person. Community Events A couple of weekends ago, I had the honor of attending two groundbreaking events in the community. The first photo shows the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Alaskan Veterans Museum. The museum has been closed for several months due to COVID. The event marked their grand re-opening. If you have not had the chance to visit the museum, I highly suggest that you do. The museum is located in the Sunshine Mall at 411 West 4th Ave. In addition to the ribbon-cutting event, I also attended the open house for Alaska Adoption Services. During the event, I was able to learn more about the mission and work of Alaska Adoption Services and how we all can help support families in need.
