John,
As the 133rd anniversary of International Workers' Day comes to a close, I’m taking some time to reflect on the history of the labor movement and my role in it.
The first International Workers' Day came about in 1889 to commemorate the Haymarket Affair — an incident in which Chicago labor activists were wrongfully executed after protesting for workers’ rights to an 8-hour workday.
In the 133 years since it was first celebrated, the holiday continues to be celebrated around the world while many Americans have almost forgotten about it.
We must continually remind ourselves that nothing has been won for the labor movement in the US without a fight. It’s up to us to continue fighting for the rights of labor and workers as an intersectional movement.
The power and weight of this history have been with me throughout my entire career.
My very first job out of college was with Congresswoman Bella Abzug; a legendary feminist, civil rights leader, and labor lawyer — she inspired me to follow in her footsteps.
Since that time, as a labor rights lawyer, I have been in the thick of it by fighting for the rights of all workers — whether it's been baristas, gig workers, strippers, or FedEx workers.
I know that this fight must include all of us if we are going to win. That’s why I have never hesitated to stand up for labor and what the dignity of work and labor means to everyone. It’s what I will continue to do as your Attorney General.
Today, I’m grateful to have the support of 36 unions representing more than 150,000 of working people across different industries and walks of life. I’m proud to be part of the legacy of the labor movement and with your support, I hope I will be able to continue that fight as your next Attorney General.
Happy May Day to all!
In solidarity,
Shannon
