John — It’s May Day!
This day, May 1, was chosen in 1889 as the date for International Workers' Day to commemorate the worker-led fight for an 8-hour work day.
Today, we celebrate May Day by honoring the domestic workers who have paved the way for better working conditions for all and as a reminder that the fight continues for broader protections under a National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.

Thanks to the powerful leadership of domestic workers and their relentless organizing, ten states and two major cities have passed domestic workers bills of rights or protections. But it’s not enough.
Housecleaners, nannies, and caregivers in most states aren’t entitled to paid sick leave to take care of themselves or their families, aren’t allowed to take meal or rest breaks while on the job, and have no protection against losing pay if an employer cancels on them at the last minute.
These essential workers, most of whom are women of color and immigrants, do not have access to these critical benefits and protections because of racist legal exclusions dating back to slavery and Jim Crow.
It is time for the federal government to provide comprehensive protections for these essential workers.
The National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights covers major gaps in protecting domestic workers in the workplace by:
- Including domestic workers in common workplace protections like paid overtime, paid sick days, safe and healthy working conditions, meal and rest breaks, and freedom from sexual harassment.
- Creating new protections to address the unique challenges of domestic work: written agreements, fair scheduling, a new standards board and support for survivors of sexual harassment.
- Ensuring rights are enforced and implemented.
Passing a National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights is critical to winning justice and dignity for domestic workers and we need your support to make it happen [[link removed]] .
Thanks for all that you do,
