We’ve been sounding the alarm about the Far Right’s extreme rhetoric
attacking the LGBTQ+ community, and in recent weeks, we’ve seen it get
worse.

Following passage of Florida’s now notorious “Don’t Say Gay” bill, extreme
right-wing lawmakers in at least a dozen other states have introduced
similar legislation.^[ [link removed] ] Their goal? Win in the midterms by intensifying a
fearmongering campaign that dangerously demonizes an entire community.

We’ve seen this playbook before and unless we continue pushing back, it
might pay off.

[1]Sign the petition now calling on state legislators to STOP the attacks
on the LGBTQ+ community and to stop the extremely dangerous rhetoric
they’ve used to smear opponents of their legislation >>

The latest flashpoint in this fight is Michigan, where State Senator
Mallory McMorrow took to the chamber’s floor to rebuke a Republican
colleague, Senator Lana Theis, who called her a liberal social media
“troll” and accused her of wanting to “groom” and
“sexualize” kindergartners and teach “that 8-year-olds are responsible for
slavery.” Theis then went on to use the same social media language
attacking McMorrow in a fundraising email for her campaign!^[ [link removed] ]

In her impassioned speech, McMorrow strongly rebuked these awful attacks
and underscored the need for people across the country to call out the
horrific legislation and the dangerous rhetoric used by the Far Right to
push their agenda:

“I know that hate will only win if people like me stand by and let it
happen. And I want to be very clear right now: call me whatever you
want. I know who I am. I know what faith and service mean, and what it
calls for in this moment. We will not let hate win.” ^[ [link removed] ]
