Hi Friend,
Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
It marks the beginning of the annual International United Nations Campaign, urging 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, which ends on December 10, International Human Rights Day. In recent weeks, there have been a number of positive steps taken to address these issues right here on American soil.
Last week, Senator Joni Ernst introduced the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019 (VAWA). This legislation embraces a more modern, stronger, and proactive approach to the current threats faced by young women and girls in the U.S.
For the first time, this new and better VAWA seriously addresses the horrific practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), sex trafficking, honor violence, and child marriage. Many are shocked to learn that FGM occurs in the U.S…. but it does.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control estimates that more than 500,000 women and girls in the United States have experienced or are at risk of experiencing FGM.That’s why we need to make sure that people are aware of this threat and are working to end it.
That’s why we are calling on you to join us in taking action,
friend.
