Dear Mr. xxxxxx:
It's hard to believe that four months of the year have already come and gone. (It's only 126 days until football season begins!). Congress was in recess for two weeks in April for district work periods. But there was still a lot happening in Washington, and around the world.
Demanding Answers at the Border
The Biden Administration has done absolutely nothing to try and stem the tide of millions of illegal immigrants pouring across our southern border. To the contrary, his lack of action has only encouraged more people to illegally cross. The numbers are only likely to increase in the coming months.
These people are sneaking across the border without proper screening to determine who they are, why they want to come here and if they are dangerous criminals. In March, more than 200,000 crossed the border illegally.
I joined with several of my Republican colleagues in writing a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, criticizing him for his handling of the crisis at the southern border. You can read more about that letter here.
Sanctioned by Russia, More Help for Ukraine, Strengthening Our Own Defenses
I found out earlier this month that I have been sanctioned by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russians sanctioned 398 members of Congress in retaliation for supporting Ukraine with weapons and recovery aid. So, what does it mean that I've been sanctioned? Well, not much. It basically means I can't travel to Russia. I jokingly said at the time, "well, there go our spring break plans in Siberia." I'm proud to be on the list of sanctioned members.
Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine continues. However, thanks to weapons we have supplied to them, they have been able to push the Russians back and substantially weaken the Russian military. They still need more weapons and I support our efforts to help them.
I also believe that we need to be doing more to strengthen our own military and defenses. Our military is in danger of falling behind the Chinese. In just a few years, the Chinese are projected to be on par with our capabilities. We cannot allow this to happen. Next week, I will deliver a speech in Huntsville to lay out my plan for rebuilding our military to make sure we remain the most powerful nation on earth.
4th District Art Competition
On April 21st we held our annual Congressional Art Competition awards ceremony at Wallace State Community College. This competition has been taking place annually in all 435 Congressional Districts across the country since 1982.
This year our "Best of Show" winner was Anaid Bernachi of Guntersville High School. She is pictured above, along with her art teacher Val Jones. Her winning piece was a graphite drawing of her brother Noah, asleep on the couch.
The entire awards ceremony can be watched here.
School Visits are Back!
School kids are finally able to visit the capitol building again. Democrats, who as you know are in the majority, (for now), kept the building closed for far too long. The building is now back open, along with the Capitol Visitors Center. I hope to see more pictures like this in the coming months. In the photo are elementary students from Hackleburg in Marion County.
I hope you have a great month of May. And let me wish all of the mothers out there a very happy Mother's Day. May God bless you and your loved ones.
Sincerely,
Robert B. Aderholt
