Most people know someone who identifies as gay or lesbian, but fewer than 1 in 3 know someone who is transgender, and fewer than 1 in 5 know someone who is nonbinary. Despite this gap, most adults are still opposed to efforts that would harm the trans community.

The TL;DR of a poll we conducted is this: Most adults oppose anti-LGBTQ education policies. But we created the infographic below to help you dig deeper into this data. Also, read through our answers to frequently asked questions about creating safer spaces in schools for LGBTQ youth.

The bottom line? Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in school.

A majority of surveyed adults are comfortable having children who identify as LGBTQ.


Adults who say they would be comfortable if their child came out to them as:

Gay, lesbian, or bisexual - 62%; Transgender - 50%

A majority of surveyed U.S. adults oppose anti-LGBTQ education policies.
54% of adults oppose blocking access to LGBTO resources and educational content on the internet at school, 56% of adults oppose banning books on LGBTQ topics in school libraries, 52% of adults oppose banning classroom discussions about LGBTO topics, including sexual orientation and gender identity in school

They also oppose efforts to outlaw
 gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
45%
of U.S. adults oppose the idea that lawmakers should have the ability to outlaw gender-affirming medical care for minors, even if such a ban is against the recommendation of doctors and major medical associations.

In fact, a majority of adults support access to gender-affirming care and LGBTQ-inclusive education in schools.


55% of U.S. adults support:
  • Access to gender-affirming hormone therapy for transgender minors, if it is recommended by their doctor and supported by their parents
  • Including information on LGBTQ identity and relationships in health education classes and school

U.S. Adults feel they are relatively knowledgeable about suicide prevention.

 

Seven in ten adults (68%) feel they are knowledgeable about suicide prevention.

This poll was conducted between February 18- February 19, 2022 among a sample of 2,210 adults. The interviews were conducted online and the data were weighted to approximate a target sample of Adults based on gender, educational attainment, age, race, and region. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
