For far too long, folks who call themselves ‘conservatives’ have been waging a war on women’s health and reproductive freedom — and using this as an issue to divide us in this country.

Republican leaders from many of the same states that wanted to secede from the union over the government’s ‘mask mandate’ are just fine legislating women’s health care decisions for them.

And let’s be clear, the GOP attack goes beyond restricting access to legal abortion services — it is a broader attack on women’s reproductive health services. Just yesterday Senate Democrats had to push back against Republican efforts to deny patients access to essential and affordable care through the Title X gag rule — including access to birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing, and more.

We need to make it crystal clear that we are united and determined to protect reproductive freedom as the law of the land.

My very first campaign was on the ‘Choice Team’ that defeated a state legislator opposed to reproductive freedom. I won that election and worked to pass the bill that successfully codified Roe v. Wade in Maryland law.

From that time to today, I have worked to defend reproductive freedom and I'm proud to have been recognized by NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC), and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund for my work.

But today Republican state legislatures across the country are declaring war on women’s health services and if we lose control of the Senate and our ability to pass national legislation to protect them, poor women in these states will lose access not just to safe and legal abortion services, but affordable birth control, cancer screenings, and more.

That's why it's more important than ever that we don’t stop working and organizing to defeat those extremists who in the name of “ending abortion in America” (‘legal’ abortion services) are waging a full-throated war against publicly funded women’s health services.
