Today (Friday, April 29) is the last day for policy committees to hear and move fiscal bills to their house of origin Appropriations Committee and next week is the deadline for non-fiscal bills to clear committees and head to the floor, meaning this is a tremendously busy time for bills moving around the Capitol. 

Governor Newsom’s May Budget Revision will also be released soon, adding to the work being done to analyze and move fiscal bills before the State’s June 15 deadline to pass a budget. 

The CCC closely monitors bills as they make their way furiously through the Capitol. Please don’t delay in notifying your lawmaker of your support and opposition to our list of bills using our alert system. 

California Catholic Conference Executive Director Kathleen Domingo testified against AB 2134, a bill by Assemblymember Weber (D – San Diego). This bill would establish the California Reproductive Health Equity Fund (CRHEF). A Medi-Cal enrolled provider could apply for a grant to provide free abortion and contraception to uninsured or underinsured individuals at or below 400% of the federal poverty level. It also forces employers who object to abortion in conscience to pay yet another tax for abortion, and forces all employers to advertise free abortion and contraception outside their plans. 

Domingo argues there are no equitable services for those who wish to parent or are parents and explains that the bill would be devastating to Catholic ministries in California.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — If young people recognize all that they have received with gratitude and older people take the initiative of relaunching hope in young people for their future, then nothing can stop the flourishing of God’s blessings among people, Pope Francis said.

Urging visitors to make sure they help bring young and older people together to talk and connect, the pope said this is a “bridge that we have to reestablish more strongly” because it is through this connection that salvation, hope and joy flow.

The pope made his remarks April 27 during his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square, where he also asked that people “persevere in praying constantly for peace.”
