The Clean Water Act of 1972 set the precedent for protecting the nation’s water. Although the law increased funding to build and improve our wastewater systems, since then federal funding for water infrastructure has been slashed by nearly 80%.

Our outdated water systems are dumping billions of gallons of raw sewage into our waterways, flooding streets and neighborhoods, and contaminating our drinking water. Climate change is now making matters worse.

Food & Water Action is fighting every day for real, permanent federal investment in our water and wastewater infrastructure to improve water quality and promote climate resilience. To protect human health and the environment, we must have dedicated support for our aging drinking water and wastewater systems. But federal funding is currently falling far short of what’s needed. The bipartisan infrastructure law of 2021 provided less than a tenth of the funding that our water systems need.

This is unacceptable — so we’re organizing to pass the WATER Act (HR 1352, S916), federal legislation that would fund critical upgrades for communities' water systems, to ensure that everyone has access to safe, clean and affordable water.

We must renew our commitment to public water and fight for safe water at the federal level. Our campaign has grown support in Congress with 93 cosponsors in the House and five in the Senate, but there is more to do.
