Friend,
There’s never been a more difficult time for online journalism than right now. Just look at the wave of layoffs being announced by other news outlets.
Last year, 70 staffers were laid off at HuffPost. In March, BuzzFeed offered buyouts to 36 newsroom staff members. Then we got word that The Intercept would let go of 20 of its staff. We’re even hearing doomsday predictions about the
fall of independent digital journalism entirely.
These are our professional colleagues, and this saddens and angers us deeply.
Common Dreams has not been forced to make these kinds of announcements. But we’ll be honest: If we’re not able to meet our fundraising target this campaign, we could be next.
On top of some deeper, fundamental pressures we now face, the COVID-19 pandemic has delivered a once-in-a-lifetime body blow to our operations. It has hit our readers and their families hard, and it has hit us hard. We know we will survive, but it’s going to take a big lift from everyone who is able and willing to help us through.
Will you make a donation to help Common Dreams meet our must-hit Spring Campaign goal?
We know times are tough. But we don’t give up. We don’t give in. We thank you for your ongoing support and belief in this mission and our work.
