Last week, the Department of Justice concluded its investigation into Mississippi's notorious state penitentiary at Parchman. They found that the conditions were so dangerous that Parchman violated the constitutional rights of the people incarcerated there. The findings affirm what we have known all along: U.S. prisons are in crisis and in desperate need of independent oversight.

In May 2019, FAMM sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division urging an investigation of Parchman for possible constitutional violations due to unsafe conditions. Shortly after, we launched a nationwide hotline that routed thousands of calls to the Department of Justice. We are grateful to members, like you, who took action to bring the conditions at Parchman to the nation's attention.

We are proud to have taken the lead on bringing attention to the crisis at Parchman and are still working to improve conditions in other prisons. Prisons across the country are overcrowded, understaffed, and unsafe for both incarcerated people and staff.

Friends, we need you to email your lawmakers and urge them to create an independent oversight body that would have the authority to monitor and inspect facilities, address concerns of both incarcerated people and their families, and provide recommendations for improving correctional departments.
