Friend: When we talk about inequality in America, we have to talk about what’s happened with housing. Where you live determines the air you breathe, the water you drink, the school you send your kids to, where you’re able to buy groceries for your family, how long it takes you to get to work, and so much more.
Right now, the corporations that have taken over our housing stock are letting big banks and luxury developers make these choices for us. Safe, affordable housing — developed with climate-smart infrastructure — has to be available for everyone. I’ve just released my Affordable Housing framework, and I hope you’ll take a moment to read through how I propose to tackle the housing crisis. [link removed]
I live in San Francisco, where the stark reality of this housing crisis plays out every day. More than 17,000 people are forced to sleep on the streets. Rents are skyrocketing out of control. Home ownership for many young people — and especially for people of color — feels like an impossible dream from a long-past era.
But where there’s injustice, there’s also opportunity. We have a chance here to undo the policies that brought us into this crisis, and work together on environmentally-friendly housing solutions to last us for the long run.
To learn more, read my plan here, and join me as we make sure everyone has a safe and sustainable place to call home. [link removed]
Take care,
Tom
