April News from AHC News from AHC Inc. l April 2022 Developing affordable homes and helping communities thrive since 1975. Clockwise from top left: Caroline Wolford started volunteering as a freshman in college and is currently working on her masters in education; Leslie Korn wears multiple volunteer hats, including food distribution and tutoring; Sharon Showalter, a 10-year tutor, has helped several students through the college application process; and Billie Morin is organizing the books in the library at Charter House, a senior property in Bethesda. Housing + VOLUNTEERS = Success! AHC Celebrates 350 Volunteers During Volunteer Month Providing services where residents live is AHC’s secret sauce. Volunteers are the key ingredient. This Volunteer Month, AHC is celebrating the nearly 350 individuals and groups who generously contribute their time and talents annually through our education and social services programs. Thank you all! Some individuals volunteer year after year. Their ongoing service provides the continuity and meaningful relationships that help students immeasurably and are the hallmark of our programs. We are deeply grateful for volunteers’ dedication and commitment. As of this year, 51 people have volunteered for more than five years. In 2022, we are honoring 10 outstanding volunteers who have reached the five- or 10-year milestone. Deep thanks to Patricia Arriagada (5 years), Colin Bracis (5 years), Alyse Gardner (5 years), Alex Hegji (5 years), Lisa Ju (5 years), Leslie Korn (5 years), Peter Pfeifer (5 years), Lauren Rosenthal (5 years), Sharon Showalter (10 years), and Caroline Wolford (5 years). Volunteers are of all ages and backgrounds and are drawn to AHC's programs for many reasons. The common thread, however, is the reward of helping others while building lasting personal relationships. Honoring Resident Volunteers in Baltimore As part of Volunteer Month, the Resident Services team at MonteVerde, a senior apartment community in Baltimore, honored a committed group of residents who have volunteered at the property for years. They have all significantly boosted their efforts during the pandemic. The long-time volunteers sprang into action to help neighbors and maintain a sense of community as COVID-19 isolated many residents. The energetic volunteers delivered meals to residents’ doors, helped with monthly food distributions, checked on frail and elderly neighbors, assisted with vaccine clinics, and basically pitched in whenever anything was needed. We are deeply grateful to all! Learn more about MonteVerde volunteers CEO Paul Bernard (center) got a first-hand look at the construction progress at Arlington View Terrace during a site tour with Construction Director Marlon Moore (left) and Construction Manager Tim Craft. Arlington View Terrace East Takes Shape Arlington View Terrace East, which will provide 77 affordable apartments in 2023, is well underway. Harkins Builders has nearly completed 95% of the wood framing on the first floor and has begun working on the second floor. We expect to start installing the roof in June. Because the building is close to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (less than five miles), we are required to notify the Federal Aviation Administration when we reach the building's highest point. Last month we did just that when we completed one of the stair towers, which is 68 feet above the garage floor. Stay tuned for more updates. Meanwhile, keep an eye on the construction cam. Seven community partners joined us for the event, providing residents with a wide variety of helpful services and resources. Partners included: Neighborhood Health, Doorways, R.E.A.D., Arlington County Police Department Community Engagement, AFAC, Arlington Public School Parent Resource Center, and Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. Families enjoyed talking with representatives, learning more about local services, and taking home snacks, books, and contact information. Thank you to all who joined us!
