Weekly InSight
Last October, Colombian authorities got their man, arresting Otoniel, the chief of the feared Urabeños. Six months on, InSight Crime examines the wealth of troubles facing the country’s largest drug trafficking group, including independent-minded commanders, revived rivals and a struggle to control crucial coca-producing areas.

This week, InSight Crime is also launching its dedicated InDepth page for Gender and Crime issues, with two stories looking at the criminalization of women connected to the MS13 gang in El Salvador. Elsewhere, we look at how weapons are being funneled from Argentina into Chile and how a civil war between former FARC rebels is setting the Putumayo region ablaze in southern Colombia.

United They Stand, Divided They Fall - Urabeños Losing Grip in Colombia

After a manhunt that lasted for years, Colombian authorities caught their most-wanted man in October. A former guerrilla and paramilitary fighter, Otoniel was one of the country's most prolific drug traffickers, leading the powerful Urabeños.

But six months on, what has changed in Colombia's criminal landscape? Is Otoniel's drug trafficking empire crumbling or has a new leader arisen to hold it together?

Venezuela Drug Trafficking Investigation and InDepth Gender Coverage

On May 4, InSight Crime will be publishing The Cocaine Revolution in Venezuela, a groundbreaking investigation into how the Venezuelan government regulates the cocaine trade in the country. An accompanying event, featuring InSight Crime’s co-director Jeremy McDermott and a panel of leading specialists on Venezuelan crime and security, will be livestreamed in Spanish on Youtube.
InSight Crime puts a gender perspective front and center, not only as part of our daily coverage but as the focus for investigations, such as The Paramilitaries and Sexual Violence Along Colombia’s Caribbean Coast, published in April 2022.

To ensure the highest of standards when it comes to raising awareness of these issues, InSight Crime has conducted internal workshops to improve our coverage of gender and organized crime, and to ensure we do not re-victimise the protagonists of our stories, who have suffered violence at the hands of criminal organizations.
