Dear friend,
The last two months have been a whirlwind, and I wanted to touch base personally.
First, let me begin by saying thank you. I'm grateful for the support and encouragement you've provided me, and never more so than over the past couple months. It's a relief and a huge boost to know that so many Americans like you are with me in our fight for our democracy, and that you step up time and again to prove it.
It's been a momentous two months since we first saw the call record of President Trump's call with President Zelensky, and investigation kicked into high gear. And in those two months, we've learned so much more about what occurred and the extent of the abuse of power by this president.
Through weeks of transcribed interviews and depositions and the just concluded two weeks of public hearings, we have found damning evidence that the President of the United States abused his power to obtain the assistance of a foreign power in his reelection campaign. We found that he had conditioned official acts, including a coveted White House meeting and military aid, as leverage to get Ukraine to announce politically-motivated investigations to help him politically.
We know these facts in spite of an unprecedented campaign of obstruction by Trump and his Administration, seeking to prevent witnesses from testifying and refusing to turn over a single document in response to lawful subpoenas from Congress. This failed effort to stonewall is utterly lawless, and if allowed to stand, would do grave damage to our system of checks and balances.
It is difficult to envision a more troubling betrayal of the oath of office.
The question is now where do we go from here.
We will begin by preparing a report that will systematically lay out our findings in this investigation, based on the testimony of the witnesses who came forward and told us what they saw. As we have throughout this investigation, we will be moving quickly and working through the Thanksgiving holiday. Simply put, this is too important to wait.
I am withholding judgment on the question of impeachment, and I am eager to hear more from my constituents and supporters. Fundamentally, the question that Americans who watched the hearings must ask themselves is: Are the president's actions compatible with the office of the presidency?
All members of the House will have to examine their conscience and their constitutional duty and decide.
In my view, there is nothing more dangerous than a deeply unethical president who believes that he is above the law and beyond accountability.
In the words of my dear former colleague, Elijah Cummings, we are better than that.
I hope you all have a restful and wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Thanks for all you do, and for standing with me during these past couple of months.
Gratefully,
AdamAdam Schiff represents California's 28th Congressional District. Since he was first elected to Congress in 2000, Adam has been a leading progressive voice, especially when it comes to issues of national security, protecting our environment, and improving our nation’s economy, health care, and education. He is the Ranking Member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, working to defend our democratic values.
