Friend,
I’m excited to join my sister in service, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in celebrating that Congress is putting the Green New Deal into action now.
My colleagues in Congress and I have secured millions of dollars for Green New Deal community projects across the country, which will create good green jobs, provide environmental justice, and slow the pace of climate change.
The communities that especially need and deserve resources are those on the front lines of the environmental crisis. This unfortunately includes my district, where already-high rates of pollution-related diseases are rising, including asthma.
In Detroit, for example, asthma is 46% more common than in the rest of our state. On top of this disparity is another one: The asthma hospitalization rate for Detroit’s Black residents is more than 3 times higher than for white residents.
It’s time for our government to invest in frontline communities, so I’m proud to have secured nearly $6 million for life-changing Green New Deal projects in my district—including funding to address flooding, provide energy-efficient home repairs for low-income homeowners, and deploy high-speed broadband and build community spaces.
When looking at the community projects across the country as a whole, we can begin to see the foundations for a federal Green New Deal.
And this is just the beginning.
Will you chip in now so we can keep making our communities healthier, safer, stronger, and more resilient?
