Indigenous women and girls are murdered and go missing at alarming rates. According to the World Bank, one billion women—one out of three women globally—will face intimate partner violence or sexual violence in her lifetime.
In Canada, Indigenous women are murdered at a rate seven times higher than non-Indigenous women. In the United States, the National Institute of Justice has released staggering statistics showing that 84 percent of Alaska Native and Native American women have experienced some form of violence in their lifetimes, ranging from psychological to sexual and physical violence, most often perpetrated by non-Native men. Despite the gravity of the situation, more than a third were unable to access legal, medical, and other services.
In Latin America, femicide — the murder of women because of their gender — is rampant, and 98 percent of cases go unpunished. In Guatemala, two women are murdered every day. Indigenous women are more at risk for this violence, particularly in the context of militarization and forced eviction.
Indigenous women are disproportionately affected by violence and discrimination because of their intersectional identities that make them more vulnerable than other groups in society. Underlying factors of poverty, racism, marginalization from justice and government services, legacies of colonial violence, and hypersexualized images of Native women in the media have made Indigenous women frequent targets.
At Cultural Survival, we believe that representation of Indigenous women in the media matters and are committed to amplifying the voices of Indigenous women and promoting Indigenous women’s leadership in media. Our Community Media Program provides workshops for Indigenous women in Central America and Mexico in radio production and maintenance, journalism, and advocacy. But ahead of building technical skills, our workshop facilitators, trained in healing for women who have experienced violence and trauma, offer safe, women-only space for participants to share their stories. Mariana Cecilia García Sánchez (Nahua), a community doctor from San Miguel Tzincapan, Mexico, sums up the value of these workshops:

** “Radio came to me, like corn to this world, to fill me with life. Cultural Survival gave me the gift of a beautiful opportunity, to recognize the power of my voice, my words. It helped me understand that my dream for a community and a country where women do not need to cry in silence, is possible. That my words, my voice, are a tool for hope and strength for many other women.
I also learned that not only is my work important, but also, I am important! This process has planted in me many seeds: a desire to learn technical skills, admiration for other women and their stories, the fight for our shared pain, and a desire to work on radio production, interviews, and the radio content that is lacking. A love of myself, my people, for the radio station, and my dreams. Thank you to Cultural Survival, for this process and this opportunity.”

Ending Violence Against Women: Remembering Sarah Baartman ([link removed])
November 25th is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Cultural Survival remembers Sarah Baartman, a Khoikhoi woman who, under Dutch colonization of her homeland, was taken captive and coerced to participate in public shows and medical examinations which relied on a falsified science of racial difference. We honor her life as a testament to the urgent necessity of having an international day when the world renews its commitment to end violence against women, especially Indigenous women and women of color.

Gender Equality on International Indigenous Women's Day ([link removed])
Bartolina Sisa was killed in Bolivia in 1782. International Indigenous Women's Day is held each year on September 5th. Although women fight for their rights and the rights of their people, not enough recognition is given to the efforts of women.
