The report analysis suggests almost half of the 25 largest investor-owned utilities in the United States are aggressively pushing back against climate policy matching the Paris Accord.
John,
Is this news shocking? No. Disappointing? Certainly.
According to reporting by The Washington Post, utility companies are pushing back on climate policy.
As the Biden administration and Congress take a more robust approach to tackle climate change after four years of neglect and indifference by the Trump White House, major utility companies are going all out to impede progress.
The report analysis suggests almost half of the 25 largest investor-owned utilities in the United States are aggressively pushing back against climate policy matching the Paris Accord.
While the analysis does show that some of the major utilities are engaging productively, that is no longer good enough with the severity of the crisis we face. This crisis requires all hands on deck, especially those in the energy industry who need to be a major part of the solution, not a major part of the problem.
These bad-actor utility companies are significantly ramping up their state and local lobbying of elected officials, attempting to circumvent federal efforts. These regional efforts by the utilities include advertising, direct contact with officials, and funding of campaigns and political parties.
John, SEEC members are not surprised by the reaction of Big Energy to the renewed efforts to rein them in. That’s why they’re fighting day in and day out to hold Big Energy accountable for their contributions to climate change while introducing policies that push our nation forward towards a clean energy future.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
