A round-up of news and ways to take action from this April.

Dear John

This April I’ve got some brilliant ways for you to take action – from asking your local election candidates to stop funding fossil fuels to joining us at one of our regional grassroots activism events.

But before I jump in, I want to say a big thank you.

This month almost 1,000 of you shared your thoughts and spoke up for a better environment by responding to a consultation from the UK government. And thousands more of you stood up for the planet in other ways, whether that’s by signing a petition, writing to your MP or speaking out on social media.

It’s been uplifting to see so many of you supporting our vital work – we really couldn’t do it without you. Here’s what’s going on this month.

POLICING BILL PASSED WITH DRACONIAN MEASURES
[link removed]

The UK government's controversial policing bill becomes law this week. Despite huge public outcry and opposition from many MPs, Peers and campaigners, it was finally passed with measures that will severely restrict our right to protest – and attack the way of life of Gypsy and Traveller Communities.

But our fight doesn’t end here. Our diverse movement will continue to challenge growing authoritarianism, defend the right to protest and stand in solidarity with the groups most affected. Like the Gypsy and Traveller communities who face increased criminalisation under this law.

Read on below where Romany journalist Jake Bowers explains how the bill impacts nomadic ways of life, and why we need to join forces to defend and protect our planet.

LIVERPOOL GROUP CAMPAIGNS TO PROTECT BRAZILIAN COMMUNITIES FROM HARM
There's enough food in the world for everyone. And communities everywhere should be free to grow the food they need to support themselves and their land.

Up and down the UK groups like Liverpool Friends of the Earth are campaigning locally for global system change. They’re pushing back against the expansion of Liverpool Port, a hub for importing products like soy beans – linked to massive deforestation and displacement in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Find out more about the group’s campaign and Friends of the Earth International’s collective work to make food fair for everyone.

Skyrocketing energy bills are plunging millions into poverty. And we’re facing some of the most severe climate warnings yet. We urgently need our local authorities to cut off the money pipeline to fossil fuels and invest in cheaper, greener energy solutions – right now.

On 5 May people across England and Wales will vote in their local elections. Will you ask your candidates to support the call to divest from fossil fuels?
