Professional Development: Career Paths In Health Policy

Health Affairs Editorial Board Member Katherine Baicker is a leading scholar in the economic analysis of health policy.

She attained leadership positions at two of the most respected university programs in health policy in the U.S., served on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, was a principal investigator of the landmark Oregon Health Insurance Experiment, and joined the board of a major pharmaceutical company…all before the age of 45.

Health Affairs Senior Editor Leslie Erdelack will host Dr. Baicker on May 4 for a conversation about her work, her influences, and the choices she’s made as she’s climbed the ladder in the health policy world.

Date: Wednesday, May 4, 2022
Time: 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Eastern)

Journal Club: In Medicaid Managed Care Networks, Care Is Highly Concentrated Among A Small Percentage Of Physicians

The centerpiece of the Health Affairs Journal Club meeting in May is, “In Medicaid Managed Care Networks, Care Is Highly Concentrated Among A Small Percentage Of Physicians.”

Using data from four states, Avital B. Ludomirsky and coauthors found that, of those that contracted with Medicaid, on average just 25 percent of primary care physicians provided 86 percent of care and 25 percent of specialists provided 75 percent of care.

On top of that, the study confirmed that inadequate or outdated provider directories vastly misrepresent the availability of care.

The result, the authors argue, is that current network adequacy standards may not reflect actual access to the Medicaid program; and that new methods that account for beneficiary preferences and physician willingness to serve Medicaid patients are needed to enforce these standards.

Please join Dr. Ludomirsky, a pediatrician and postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Medicine, on May 17th for a detailed discussion of the paper’s data, methods, and conclusions. Health Affairs Senior Editor Leslie Erdelack will host.

Date: Tuesday, May 17, 2022
Time: 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Eastern)

Improving The Measurement Of Structural Racism To Achieve Antiracist Health Policy

A key piece of the scholarship contained in Health Affairs February 2022 issue, “Racism and Health,” was an overview highlighting methodological approaches that will move the health care field forward in its ability to validly measure structural racism for the purposes of achieving health equity.

On May 31 at 3:00 pm ET, join Rachel R. Hardeman of the University of Minnesota and Brigette A. Davis of the University of California San Francisco, two co-authors of “Improving The Measurement Of Structural Racism To Achieve Antiracist Health Policy,” for a discussion of the methods they featured and the key areas where scholarly attention is needed to advance antiracist health policy research.

Health Affairs Senior Editor Jessica Bylander will host.

Date: Tuesday, May 31, 2022
Time: 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. (Eastern)
