Dear Friend,

Moments ago, Earthjustice filed a lawsuit against the United States Postal Service.

The Postal Service is in the process of replacing its outdated truck fleet and had an opportunity to swap its polluting trucks for electric trucks. Despite the clear benefits of moving to an all-electric fleet, the agency fudged its analysis to favor polluting trucks, ignored our public comment, and tried to gaslight the public about the facts of its plan once it realized it’d been caught in a lie. It’s time to hold the Postal Service accountable.

Over two decades, the new trucks would burn between two and four billion gallons of gasoline. The trucks will only get 8.6 miles per gallon with the air conditioning running, which is worse fuel efficiency than the vehicles they are replacing. We may as well deliver the mail with Hummers.

The Postal Service Governing Board refuses to do anything about this — in part because it’s filled with Trump-appointed Governors intent on sabotaging a critical government agency. There are currently two vacant seats on the Board, and, in December, President Biden will have an opportunity to replace two of the Governors when their terms expire. It’s crucial we ensure that he appoints and the Senate confirms competent Governors capable of guiding the Postal Service in the right direction — and we’ll be counting on you to support that effort when that time comes.

While we fight this out in court and gear up to get new leadership on the Governing Board, we need your help to keep the pressure on our leaders to act. Members of Congress, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, the United Auto Workers, and other key figures are already on our side — but we need to get through to the leaders of the Postal Service. Join us in urging the Postal Service to voluntarily correct course.

Sincerely,
Adrian Martinez
Senior Attorney
