Plus, inviting empathy for refugees from Ukraine & the world Morningside Center NEWSLETTER Dear Morningside Center friends, We have so many new resources to share with you this week! But first, we want to share the heartbreaking news that we have lost a longtime colleague who has helped to shape our work for decades, Javier Diaz. In remembering Javier, our staff lamented that “we have lost a giant” and “we have lost a library.” For a glimpse of why Javier has touched us and our work so deeply, please see our tribute to Javier, including photos and videos. Also: a reminder that we have created a Crisis Support Bundle - a hefty PDF collection of activities and ideas to help you discuss upsetting events (such as the Brooklyn subway attack) and provide support for students and adults who are experiencing loss, stress, and anxiety. For more ideas, see our recent article in Education Week, Eight Strategies to Build Community & Facilitate Healing in these Hard Times. New Lessons & Tips SEL Tip: Storytelling for Community-Building Make time for storytelling in your classroom. Invite students to share their reflections about storytelling, tell some stories themselves, and make a plan to do it again. Inviting Empathy for Refugees from Ukraine & the World Students consider what it's like to be a refugee through poetry, photos, videos, writing, and discuss the UN statement that the solidarity shown for Ukrainians should "set the example for all refugee crises." Title IX Turns 50: Gender Equity in Sports June 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX. In this activity, students learn about the history and impact of Title IX and discuss the continuing struggle for gender equity in sports. "We all have an opportunity before us to transform our organizations and reimagine our work for social change by first transforming and reimagining ourselves and our place in the work that we do toward justice and equity." By Shawn Ginwright in Yes Magazine. “We need heapings of hope. And we need heapings of grace.” Tarana Burke Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility www.morningsidecenter.org ‌ ‌ ‌ Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility | 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 550, New York, NY 10115 Unsubscribe [email protected] Update Profile | Constant Contact Data Notice Sent by [email protected]
