Smiles

One of my favorite Johnny Cash songs from the latter period of his life comes from “American II: Unchained,” an album recorded in 1995 with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as the backing band. It was the second album in Cash’s American Recordings series produced by Rick Rubin.

The opening track, “Rowboat,” is quintessential Johnny Cash—except he didn’t write the song, Beck did. When Cash heard Beck’s song he said, “It sounded like something I might have written or might have done in the sixties when I was going through some weird times.”

Here’s Cash’s version of “Rowboat” from the album.

And here’s Beck performing it live in Paris in 2013.
