On Tuesday, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 612 into law, which makes abortion completely illegal except for in medical emergencies. Performing an abortion or attempting to perform one is now punishable by a fine of up to $100,000, up to 10 years in prison, or both.

This ban sets a dangerous precedent for other Republican-controlled legislatures who may be looking to put even more restrictive abortion bans in place and gives an already-conservative Supreme Court even more momentum as they seek to dismantle Roe v. Wade this year.

Our only hope for reproductive rights is to codify Roe v. Wade , but that won’t happen without a Democratic House majority. I’m working hard to protect my vulnerable Democratic colleagues and expand our majority, but I can’t do it alone.
