Value-Based Payment Models

In this month's issue of Health Affairs, Marina Milad and coauthors
conduct a systematic literature review of the quality, spending, and
utilization effects of value-based payment models

in the commercial insurance sector.

They find that four out of five studies show positive results for
quality outcomes, and more than half show positive results for spending
and utilization outcomes.

Milad and coauthors conclude by spelling out key implications for the
future of commercial value-based payment.

"Success in improving quality, reducing spending, and improving
appropriate utilization after a shift to greater risk-sharing is far
from guaranteed," the authors write.

They indicate that value-based payment models could be enhanced by
benefit design structures and delivery system reforms.
