When I was 18, I gave birth to my daughter in a reputable hospital. However, I left traumatized and violated; I was young, scared, vulnerable, and treated as a science specimen. My permission was never sought, perhaps, because of who they saw me as just a poor, expectant black woman. The thought of another generation of mothers experiencing what I did is both unconscionable and unacceptable. The maternal mortality crisis has been taking black women, other women of color and their babies for far too long. COVID only exacerbated these ongoing disparities. Please help me keep standing up for all the mothers and babies.
