John,

All across America, frugal shoppers are bracing themselves to brave the crowds at the mall in search of the best deals of the year.

That's right: it's almost time for Black Friday again.

But while those brave, thrifty souls might find themselves fighting it out over discounted flat screens on Friday, there's one thing they probably won't have trouble getting their hands on: a parking space.

No, but really. Have you ever counted how many empty spots there are outside your local big box, even when parking demand is at its peak? And have you ever asked yourself what all that vacant asphalt costs us—and if it's really worth what we pay for it the other 364 days of the year?

Today, we're kicking off the countdown to our annual Black Friday parking event, and spreading the word about why ending mandatory parking minimums is so crucial for our communities.

Give it a read, and then let us know: would you rather have a surplus of parking, or a financially prosperous community?

-Kea and the rest of the Strong Towns Team

PS: We're just over a week away from a special event in a community that badly needs to reckon with their (too-much-)parking problem: Southern California. Tickets just got a serious price drop; will we see you there?
