Call to push for student debt relief today!

Indivisibles,

On Monday, at a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, President Biden affirmed that he was looking at options to forgive some amount of federal student loan debt (here’s coverage), a step forward from his previous actions to pause payments.

This is big! If we have President Biden’s back, and push him to go even further, it will be a huge win.

From the beginning of our Let’s Go Joe campaign, we have highlighted the need to cancel at least $50,000 in federal student debt for all borrowers. This is an economic justice issue. This is a racial justice issue. Black college graduates, on average, owe $25,000 more than white college graduates and hold $52,000 in student debt (check this report by the Educational Data Initiative). Student debt relief would fundamentally change the quality of life for millions of Americans.

Here’s the catch: President Biden has previously indicated support for canceling just $10,000 in student debt. This is a great start but it is not enough.

We need President Biden to take bold executive action to address the student debt crisis. We can’t afford to hedge small. This analysis from the Roosevelt Institute (PDF) shows that increasing the amount of debt forgiveness from $10k to $50k results in huge benefits for lower- and middle-wealth households, while providing nearly no additional benefit to the wealthiest Americans (surprise, rich people don't have student debt!).

Now is the time to make our voices heard to ensure President Biden doesn’t go small:

  1. Donate $10 to Indivisible. In moments like this, where we have a strong opportunity to make an impact immediately, we have to jump into action: sending texts and emails like this one to get activists the info they need, keeping our call and email tools online and up to date, monitoring the newest developments, and more. Grassroots support is what makes all that possible. If you can, chip in right now to fund that work.
  2. If your representative is a Democrat, click here to call and urge them to tell Biden to cancel at least $50,000 in federal student loan debt. We need to pressure our representatives to remind Biden that the time is now for bold action.
  3. If you have a Democratic senator, click here to call now and urge them to tell Biden to cancel at least $50,000 in federal student loan debt. Our senators need to speak up for the roughly 80% of borrowers who would become debt-free from a $50,000 relief target.
  4. If you live in a red state or do not have congressional representation, click here to call the White House comment line to urge President Biden to go big and cancel at least $50,000 in federal student loan debt. Let’s make sure the White House hears directly from the people that $50,000 of relief is what we need.

This is an exciting moment -- we need to cheer Biden into being even bolder. We have the possibility of influencing debt relief that will have lasting effects for 45 million Americans! Let’s take advantage of this opportunity, lock-in a $50,000 relief minimum, and take a massive step together towards ending the student debt crisis.

In solidarity,
