I am grieved to have to share with you the devastating news that my wonderful colleague, David J. Theroux—the Independent Institute’s Founder and President—has died after a brief illness. David passed away here in Oakland, California on Saturday, April 23 in the company of his loving family.

As I’m sure you know, David founded the Independent Institute, as an academic, non-profit, public policy, research and educational organization, in 1986. With the launch of Independent, David was able to realize his dream of an organization adhering to the highest standards of independent scholarly inquiry in pursuing the creation of transformational ideas addressing the most pressing social and economic challenges of the day. He was the consummate entrepreneur, constantly identifying and leading the pursuit of opportunities for advancing the principles and application of liberty for greatest impact in the public square.

David himself authored dozens of scholarly and commentary articles, and as publisher directed the publication of more than 140 scholarly books. He also created and was publisher of our influential quarterly journal, The Independent Review ([link removed]) , and he conceived and launched our lighthearted popular YouTube series, Love Gov ([link removed]) .

David is survived by his wife Mary L. G. Theroux, who worked alongside him from Independent’s founding, his two sons Paul and Drake Theroux, and three—soon to be four—grandchildren. A public memorial service is being planned for later this spring.

David Theroux leaves a legacy of helping others through his publications and philanthropy dedicated to education, freedom, peace and liberty. He will remain a living presence through his beloved family, through his many publications and media creations—and through the ongoing dynamism of the Independent Institute.

I invite you to read the extended biography ([link removed]) of David that we have posted to the Independent Institute website.

Sincerely,
Graham H. Walker, Ph.D.
Executive Director
Independent Institute
