John,
It should have never taken this long to name the cop who murdered Patrick Lyoya in Grand Rapids nearly a month ago.
Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr shot and killed Patrick Lyoya on April 4th.
Now he needs to be fired and charged. That is the BARE minimum of accountability in this case.
But the Grand Rapids DA, Chris Becker, is not likely to do it. His office has deep ties with Grand Rapids Police Department — the same Police Department that waited nearly three weeks before releasing Christopher Schurr’s name.
Right now, Christopher Schurr is on administrative leave and his policing powers have been removed. In fact, he is still being PAID.
That isn’t NEARLY enough, John. In fact, it’s appalling.
Real and true justice would be Patrick Lyoya being alive today.
While the family continues to grieve and seek the accountability they can for the brutal murder of their son, brother, and father, we’re doing what we can to make sure that some level of accountability is brought in this horrific case.
There is video evidence of Christopher Schurr shooting Patrick Lyoya in the back of his head. That doesn’t deserve administrative leave. That deserves a response to the fullest extent of the law by being fired and charged NOW.
That starts with the appointment of an independent prosecutor.
Thank you,
Real Justice
