Dear Friend,
A common theme I hear from law enforcement and the communities they serve is this: both deeply want effective and responsible policing. For this, we must prioritize the recruitment of top candidates for law enforcement agencies, and invest in peace officers and their training. We are meeting this challenge on several fronts, starting with a campaign to showcase “ Why I Serve [[link removed]] .” This campaign highlights the spirit that motivates many leaders to wear the badge and serve our communities.
A few weeks ago, I testified [[link removed]] on legislation our department developed to support new recruitment and retention efforts and to meet the mental health needs of law enforcement officers. Peace officers deal with some of life’s most difficult and dangerous situations. For many, the trauma they experience on the job is never addressed. As a result, too many officers leave their profession due to stress and anxiety–and we know from national statistics that more officers die from suicide than die of shootings and traffic accidents combined. That’s why I’m advocating for more mental health services for every law enforcement agency in the state.
Another way we are advancing public safety is by updating Colorado’s law enforcement academy curriculum and enhancing our in-service training. This means providing better education on how police and sheriffs interact with people in crisis, improving ethical decision making under stress, and developing better emotional awareness. These changes promise to enhance the quality of policing and improve the quality of life and retention of our peace officers. To keep good officers in their roles, we must invest in them.
In Colorado, we are at our best when we work together to solve problems. One such challenge is how we recruit, train, and retain effective and responsible law enforcement officers. At our department, which includes the Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, we are working hard to do just that.
Phil
