John,

Thirteen years ago today, Iowa issued its first marriage licenses for same-sex couples. It was a great day.

The fight for marriage equality was long and painful. As a proud member of Iowa’s LGBTQIA community, it was this fight that actually spurred me to action and got me started as an organizer in grassroots politics.

The fight for LGBTQ equality isn’t over yet though. We’ve come a long way, but we still have a lot of work to do.

Will you help me keep this progress going by kicking in $13 or more today? ([link removed])

Back then, I was advocating for the rights of all Iowans to be who they are and love who they love. For the past 8 years, I’ve continued this fight in the Iowa State House as Iowa’s first openly-LGBTQ State Rep.

During my time in the State House, I’ve stood up against legislation targeting LGBTQIA youth, worked to protect LGBTQIA Iowans from hate crimes, and have fought to ensure that LGBTQIA Iowans are represented and heard in all parts of our government.

This fight is as important today as ever. All across the country, we’ve seen state legislators and government officials pass legislation intended to discriminate against the LGBTQIA community.

These especially heinous bills have targeted children just for being who they are. As a person who definitely knows how this feels, know this: I will never stop fighting.

That’s why this milestone is so important to me personally. It represents a win in the fight for fairness and freedom. But it also serves as a reminder of all of the work that we as a community and we as a nation still have left.

I want to continue this work in Iowa’s State Senate, where I’ll be the first openly LGBTQIA State Senator in Iowa’s history. We must elect advocates who will stand up for those who need allies, and as your next District 39 State Senator, I will do just that.

So please, join me in celebrating this victory today and in continuing to fight for what we all deserve - the right to be ourselves without fear. Kick in what you can today and let’s take this fight to the State Senate! ([link removed])

Love always wins,
Liz Bennett
