Newly released tapes from reporters at the New York Times just exposed the true feelings of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in the immediate wake of the insurrection:

"I've had it with this guy [Trump]. What he did is unacceptable. Nobody can defend that, and nobody should defend it."

You can be sure he wasn't the only Republican who shared that sentiment. Yet days later, when it came time to vote on impeachment, McCarthy and the rest of his caucus changed their tune, voting nearly in lockstep to shield Trump from any accountability for his actions.

These tapes – the audio of which was first played on the Rachel Maddow Show – are a fitting encapsulation of McCarthy and the GOP's spinelessness when it comes to defending our democracy from the threat of Donald Trump.

Their shift has been remarkable: In the days after the insurrection, McCarthy suggested that Trump should resign from the presidency for his role in inciting the attack. Today, McCarthy blatantly refuses to cooperate with the House's bipartisan Jan. 6 committee – a committee that has requested McCarthy testify about his phone call with Trump on the day of the attack on our Capitol. It's clear that McCarthy likely has key information that would enable Congress to hold Trump accountable, but he is too focused on courting praise from Trump to do the right thing - and he apparently doesn't think there will be a political price for his cowardice.

That's where you come in. Kevin McCarthy has turned his back on truth, justice, and democracy. That's why I'm calling on 10,000 concerned Americans like you to join me in condemning McCarthy – and all Republicans who refuse to condemn Trump's role in Jan. 6. With our democratic institutions on the line, we all have a duty to raise our voices for accountability.

So please, I'm counting on you to take action today: Click here to condemn Kevin McCarthy, speak out against Republican hypocrisy, and help hold Trump and the GOP accountable for helping incite the Jan. 6 insurrection.
