April 2022 NEWS ROUNDUP

Can you believe we’re already heading into May, team? April was full of travel, building new relationships and handing out our latest round of grants! We just finished up an energizing and inspiring visit to Mississippi where we finally got to meet many of our grantees and partners in person and make our way across a truly remarkable state.

We’re getting the work done and making a real impact thanks to you. We have a big end of month budget deadline this Saturday, and I quickly wanted to ask…can I count on you to give $25 before our deadline hits? Learn more about what we are doing below and help us continue this work.

Thanks,

Groundwork Project On the Ground

Last week, I went down to Mississippi to meet up with Groundwork Project’s Southern Organizing Advisor, Charles Taylor. We connected with our amazing grantees – SHERo, the Mississippi Workers’ Center, and Quitman County Development Organization – and met so many more inspiring and exciting grassroots leaders from Jackson to the Delta.
Check out some highlights from the trip.

Groundwork’s New Grantees

You’ve already met a few of our grantees, but earlier this month we were excited to introduce you to six new grantee organizations from our partner states:

  • SHERo (Sisters Helping Every woman Rise and Organize)
  • Quitman County Development Org
  • Faith & Works Collective
  • Alabama Values Progress
  • West Virginia Faith Coalition
  • West Virginia Rivers

These organizations are tackling issues like climate action, social justice, voting rights and access, misinformation and education, and they’re making a real difference. That’s why Groundwork is so proud to support their work. Want to learn more? Get to know our new grantees and their missions on our Instagram post here.

Things you should know...

Two Starbucks stores in Groundwork’s home state of Massachusetts have voted to unionize! This move is monumental not just for the workers at these stores, but for the 200+ Starbucks locations in the U.S. and food-service workers across the country. This is proof the tide is turning; when workers unify they can create safer work environments, demand livable wages and secure their futures.

A vital news piece about Selma that demonstrates the inadequacy of national folks showing up in places only when it fits the political narrative of a given moment. We already know the importance of building sustainable movement that centers underrepresented and disenfranchised communities, but in case you needed a reminder of why our work is so critical, this is it. Read why folks in Selma are exhausted of being the ‘poster child’ for civil rights.

ACLU of Alabama shared a fantastic tweet 🧵 for folks ready to #ProtectTransKids in Alabama. Join Groundwork Project in taking action by amplifying organizations working with trans-youth and providing resources to trans community members in Alabama.
