Dear John,
Mother’s Day can be a tender time for anyone without a mom.
Hayes was just a baby when he lost his mom. He’s a beautiful Red Holstein—a breed often raised for milk—but was considered “useless” because he is male. Hayes was sold to new owners who planned to raise him for meat.
But a relative took a liking to the little calf and wanted him to have a better life. He described the affectionate, playful calf as a “big baby,” and loved taking Hayes for walks throughout his yard. Once granted custody, he asked if Hayes could come live at Farm Sanctuary.
Here, Hayes’ chosen family includes mother cows who lost their own children through animal agriculture and still have so much love to give. While no one can ever replace his mom, we’re grateful that Hayes will now only know the care and protection of Sanctuary.
Will you help us look after Hayes?
