“A liar and a traitor.” Those were Senator Elizabeth Warren’s words earlier this week, referring to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s absurd and pathetic denial of a recording that reveals he believed Trump should have resigned after the January 6 insurrection.[1]
Senator Warren’s description is both true and tragic; what’s even scarier is the very real possibility that Kevin McCarthy would ascend to Speaker of the House – making him second in the line of succession to the Presidency – if the party of the Big Lie seizes control of the House this November.
In another example, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene testified under oath last Friday that she “didn’t recall” advocating for martial law to prevent President Biden’s inauguration. Cut to 3 days later, when – in the trove of over 2,000 text messages from Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows published by CNN -- is a January 17 text from Greene pushing for exactly that.[2] (Could anyone honestly forget something as extreme as advocating for martial law to prevent the peaceful transfer of power following an election??)
We need your help. There’s a very real possibility of one or both chambers of Congress coming under the control of proponents of the “Big Lie” next year – and now, they’re showing little hesitancy to keep telling more lies. This cannot be allowed to continue.
People For is uniquely positioned to get the truth out, and to mobilize voters against the Far Right’s dangerous lies and authoritarian extremism this fall. But, with the January 6 Committee hearings quickly approaching, we can’t afford to wait. We have to use this moment for all its worth to make sure that voters know the truth ahead of the November elections and to stand up for truth and democracy ... or before we know it, it will be too late.
But as our end-of-month deadline approaches, we’re significantly short of the resources we need.
Accountability for the insurrection and seditious conspiracy that almost led to America’s first coup d’etat is essential to protecting our democracy and restoring truth, justice and the American Way. The House Select Committee on the events of January 6 will begin holding hearings in June, and Rep. Jamie Raskin has said that revelations are coming that will “blow the roof off the House.”[1]
We’re currently planning a multi-pronged, nationwide campaign including events, videos, activist briefings, and volunteer mobilization in order to maximize the impact of these hearings on this fall’s elections. This is a defining moment for this year’s elections and for American democracy itself – so we’re going to lean in with everything we have ... but we can’t do it without your urgently-needed support.
The only way to ensure the survival of our cherished democracy – and the American Way – is to keep fighting.
