Friend –
Nelson Chavez, who works for a honey producer, decided to join a group of people traveling to the US, also called a migrant caravan, after seeing it on TV. In those images, he saw his way out.
He felt compelled to leave – there were few opportunities to make a decent living in El Salvador to support his family. "I bottle the honey and sell it from my home," Chavez says. "But my income only covers half of what my family needs."
Friend – many families like Nelson's are forced to migrate because of poverty, violence, and corruption in their home countries. But thanks to the Oxfam community, we're working to help migrant families and address the root causes of migration in Central America.

Some migrants describe horrific experiences that have caused them to leave their home countries. Fernando Silva, his wife, and their nine-year-old son left their home in Honduras with nothing more than their documents and a single change of clothes each.
A relative of Fernando's was raped by a gang member; after testifying against the perpetrator, Fernando faced death threats. Back home they made $5 a day working on a pineapple farm, but they could rarely get more than a day's work in a week – they had to pull their son out of school because they couldn't afford it.
At the Guatemala-Mexico border, Oxfam and our partners were able to provide people like Nelson and Fernando with hygiene kits, food packages, shelter, showers, and clean drinking water on their journey. In their home countries, we're helping families struggling with economic hardship, empowering women to grow businesses, and working to end gender-based violence. And here in the US, we're advocating to increase the number of refugees resettled in the US and stop proposed aid cuts to Central America to protect the world's most vulnerable.
Friend, thank you for your dedication – you're helping us to strengthen our work for families in Central America and around the world.
